Maria Rodziewiczówna (1864-1944) was a daughter of Polish gentry in today's Belarus, then Russian Empire. Dispossessed by Russians and exiled with her family to Siberia as a child, she was entirely self-taught. Orphaned, she returned to Poland aged 18, where she inherited a badly mismanaged estate of over 6,000 acres, cut her hair off, donned man's clothing, and took over the management of the property. She proved an excellent farm manager and tough but fair leader of men. She paid off debt, introduced modern agricultural techniques, built roads, hospitals, and churches, led the boy scout movement, propagated Theosophy, and wrote over forty books. She was one of the most successful authors of her time and most of her books remain in print today.
