Kat Nakamura, veterinary assistant and animal lover, is having the kind of bad night even a cute Scottish terrier like Lyall can’t help. Or can he?

Kat has worked at a dude ranch near the Saguaro Rift monster portal for years, helping his friend and mentor Kaveh Salehi take care of the veterinary needs of both Earth and alien Riftworld animals. When Remi, a flashy guest at the ranch, sets up an evening out at a country music bar, it sounds like fun.

That’s until he learns that Kaveh is actually an alien dragon who’s been matched with a human soulmate.

A soulmate who could be Kat.

Panicked and angry, Kat flees back to the ranch, followed by Remi’s pet dog Lyall. But Kaveh’s monster enemies are following Kat too, and his night is about to get a lot worse, and a lot more dangerous.

Good thing Lyall isn’t who he appears to be, either.
