On a stormy night, Bess Lovelace is out in town, looking to drown her sorrows and forget the misery of her current life for one, single night. Heading into ‘Zest’ Bess meets Alex, an incredibly attractive woman who instantly captures her attention. The unexpected meeting at a club is heady, passionate and unforgettable-until Bess comes to her senses and gets the hell out of there-and back out into the raging turbulent weather.
As Bess tries to leave the city rapidly, the storm worsens. Caught in the midst of it, she ignores Alex’s calls to stop as she runs out into the road, and in an unforeseen turn of events, is struck by lightning.
When Bess wakes, she finds herself in hospital. Opening her eyes, she sees that she is in a room filled with people, and her head is pounding with white noise. Struggling to cope with the voices which are rushing through her head, Bess is unprepared for a confrontation with her wife, Tess. Desperately unhappy, Bess is concerned about their future.. The other woman in the room is an unexpected surprise.
The woman from the club-Alex-is still hanging around, worried and concerned about the lightning strike, and how it has affected Bess. Bess speaks to Alex at the first possible opportunity and begs her to remain quiet about their unplanned, brief dalliance. As a local private investigator, Alex Arden agrees for the sake of Bess’ health. She is taken with the beautiful, elfin woman but worried that her mental health is unstable-especially when Bess starts to talk about details of the case she is working on, and appears to know things she cannot possibly know.
The lightning strike seems to have irreversibly affected Bess, as the voices don’t go away once she recovers. Burdened with a new ability which enables her to hear other people’s thoughts and sense their feelings, Bess must deal with her turbulent personal life alongside her new role in helping private investigator Alex Arden with her case.
