Overview

Eighteen year old Connie Mills has limped badly since a childhood injury to her leg. But, when she tries on her first pair of high heels she is astonished that she can now walk without limping. Connie and her mother are living at the poverty level in McDowell County, West Virginia. When circumstances worsen for them financially, Connie has no idea what to do. With her father having passed away in a mining accident years before, it's just Connie and her mom against the world. Connie meets twenty-two year old Carla Santibanez, who has recently moved in with her grandmother, near where Connie lives. Connie looks up to Carla, and the two quickly become soul level friends--in spite of Carla's occupation as a stripper.
