To protest his state government's threats to stop issuing marriage licenses to same-sex couples come January, baker Spencer Holiday concocts a promotion to provide a free wedding cake to a gay couple getting married around Christmastime. When an error by Spencer's younger brother results in the number of free cakes rising from one to twelve, it really puts Spencer in a bind. To make matters worse, Holiday Bakery seems suddenly jinxed. Everything that can go wrong there does, which leads to Spencer's handyman, Getty, being around the shop almost 24/7. While Spencer's brother tries to shove the pair together romantically, like a character in a Hallmark movie, Getty's daughter, Isabelle, does her best to keep them apart. Spencer is determined to make it all work, but it seems as if happily ever after and coming through on the contest commitment by Christmas will not be a piece of cake.
