At eighteen, Publius Scipio – son of a Roman senator – has been raised to see the Carthaginians as cruel, bloodthirsty savages. Yet when he is taken hostage by Carthage’s forces at the fateful Battle of Cannae, he meets the opposing commander Hannibal Barca, and discovers a side to the enemy he did not expect.
