Ethan’s not sure what’s more painful: the heartbreak he feels over the break-up of his relationship or the altitude sickness that’s making him want to throw up every few seconds.

At 10,000 feet above sea level, the pueblo at the base of Machu Picchu is stunningly beautiful, but the lack of oxygen makes Ethan feel like his whole body might explode. He’s not sure he can hike another step until he meets the sensual and mysterious Mateo, who offers him an ancient herbal remedy that cures a lot more than his altitude sickness.

As Ethan and Mateo get closer, they climb Machu Picchu, have dinner at a gorgeous estancia overlooking the Urubamba River, and attend a Bajada de Reyes festival on the eve of Three Kings Day. The celebration is a mix of Incan and Christian rituals involving dancing, drumming and the burning of an effigy to symbolize new beginnings. After a stolen kiss in a secluded courtyard, Ethan finally believes that a new beginning is exactly what he needs.
