Overview

The cracks had opened wide one day, let the monsters out, and swallowed every bright thing.

While the cell is sparse and cold, at least this one has a bed. The figure resting there is too thin; too still, the prominent bones the result of long starvation, the stillness the product of too much anguish and abuse. He watches, though. An anxious, intelligent mind still occupies this frail and failing body, one that watches and wonders about the new guard occupying his cell each night.

There are times where some books work the best as small novellas, and this book is the perfect example. While the topics it touches are not light at all, it is a surprisingly easy read. Part of me wishes it were longer because the plot is very interesting and it could work for a full book, but I think I am fine with it being so short. It gave the right amount of hurt and comfort. It was interesting to know about the MCs backstory, though it was for small bits. I also liked that the interactions between them because they were organic, and at no moment it used the instalove trope (which I am not a big fan of). It was a connection that developed later and behind the scenes, which I appreciate for what it is. Since the overall concept and writting style was gripping, I am willing to read the rest of the series. I am hoping the other books are as good as this one! :D
