It is England in 1962 - homosexuality is illegal and there is a new national sport - Queer Bashing - where gangs of men roam the streets of cities and beat up and kill homos. The police do little to solve these crimes because the police are in the habit of arresting and beating up the homosexuals themselves.. Into this tale steps Robert Tennell, an English Public School Boy, a War Hero during the Second World War and now a Detective Inspector in the English police force who is, himself, a homosexual, who is in a happy secretive same-sex relationship until tragedy overtakes him with several deaths. Through his pain, his worry, his deep sense of loss, he investigates a serious child abduction case then he investigates two murders, all the time with his heart breaking, all the time living with the fear of being discovered for who he is, for what he is. Robert Tennell is a man who wants above all else to live the Right Life but who is stuck in the Left Life, living the life he pretends to like. This is not a novel for those who still believe homosexuals are the scourge of the world, who believe that they are the greatest sin in history. This is a novel about homosexuals for homosexuals - it is a rarity, it is a conventional crime novel with a very unconventional cast of characters, it is about a man who finally decides to live the Right Life
