Overview

The jazz music and bright lights of the Roaring Twenties are an elaborate façade covering a dark underbelly, fueled by criminal activity. Secrets are layered on top of secrets, with some secrets only being secrets because people choose to ignore them. Betty is a charismatic flapper with no real aspirations aside from working as a switchboard operator by day and then taking advantage of the glamorous New York City nightlife each evening. That is until she has a fated - albeit awkward - run-in with the famous silent film actress, Claire Caprioli. Blundering into a passionate affair with Claire causes her to also blunder into a web of lies and betrayal as she unwittingly entangles herself with the criminal element of the city. She doesn't take any of it very seriously until she realizes the full depth of her feelings for Claire. Claire often comes off as aloof and careless, thinking herself untouchable thanks to her marriage to Mafioso, Simon Caprioli. Their marriage is loveless but symbiotic. Claire prefers the company of women, but the business-minded Simon has found that she's incredibly useful in several of his rackets as well as his legal operations. Her role in the family is far more significant than it should be, overshadowing even Simon's own brother, Enzo. Claire has gained the respect of Simon, but has become a constant source of ire for her traditional brother-in-law. Enzo has been trying to secretly eliminate her and thus far failing, due largely to his own ineptitude. As the women deal with seemingly constant backstabbing and the incompetent Enzo, they also must face their own feelings in this romantic, and at times comedic, mobster drama.
