When the vivacious Jemima moves to the North-East of England, she makes a new home for herself in the picture-postcard village of Washington, and soon joins a local church. There she meets the quiet and some might say “stand-offish” Joyce, and the two women spark an instant but tentative connection.

Jemima’s daughter. Eliza, is not just adapting to this new environment, but she is also starting to think for herself, and emerging from the shadow of her overpowering twin, Grace. She has a secret or two of her own, but isn’t quite ready to admit what it might all mean. That is, until she meets Joyce’s daughter Eli, who challenges her to face some difficult truths.
