Overview

Something happened to the young in the 1960’s.

Connie Norton is 27, an associate in a good law firm, and scheduled to marry an arrogant young man who bores her without her quite realizing why. She meets Tottie, a young runaway from a wealthy family, who is apparently involved with violent student activists. Befriending Tottie means dealing with her needs; helping her cope with emotional burdens, her dictator father, the police and their interest in Tottie’s activities and friends, the drug scene. Nothing in Connie’s life has prepared her for Tottie’s world.

In the midst of this, Connie realizes that she is in love with Tottie, and Tottie’s love in return awakens her to the fact that she must resist the pressures of her own social and professional world. As did so many young women in the 1960’s, Connie looks at her passive acceptance of the role for which she seems cast and realizes she must either escape or lose her own identity.

TOTTIE is Sarah Aldridge’s new novel and a more than worthy successor to THE LATECOMER.
